Fly to the Front
Get that upgrade
07 January 2009
The old saying 'getting there is half the fun', doesn't often apply these days when flying, especially those nasty long haul night flights. However, flying business or first class would make it a lot more bearable than being stuck down the back!
So here is everything you need to know to increase your chances of getting an upgrade:
Be loyal to a frequent flyer program. The higher your status the more chance you have of an upgrade. Frequentflyer.com helps you compare the different options.
Choose a busy flight time. If it's oversold they may need to upgrade people, so why not you!
Dress the part. If you look smart there is more chance of being moved up the front.
Use your assets.A smile goes a long way, you might even want to be a bit cheeky and approach an agent of the opposite sex.
Travel solo. Leave the kids at home. Travelling with kids will reduce your chances of an upgrade. Being on your own gives you the best chance.
Tell them it's a special occasion. If it's your birthday or honeymoon, (even if its not!), it's worth telling the staff as they might be feeling generous.
Check in early or late as staff will have a better idea if first class has extra seats or is over booked.
Don't risk a crummy seat either, check out seat guru so you can request the best seat available and avoid the worst at the back. Only problem is there's no guarantee who'll end up sitting next to you!
