Gong Xi Fa Cai Happy Chinese New Year!

19 January 2009

Chinese New Year is just around the corner, so it's time to let go of all that has passed and welcome the new. Here is a quick run down to ensure your luck in the upcoming year of the Ox.

1. Clear the home. Get rid of all the leftover things that are associated with the old year. This ensures you have cleaned away all the bad luck of the preceding year, and made your home ready for the good luck roll in.

2. Put away brooms and brushes on the first day of the New Year, so that luck cannot be swept away.

3. Pay off that AMEX bill and any other niggling little debts hanging around.

4. Buy that red dress, matching red shoes and get your hair-cut. This symbolizes a fresh start, and you will look great too. (Don't use the AMEX though!)

5. Buy plum blossom, peach blossom or water lilies for home.

6. Make Lucky Money Envelopes (Lee See) by filling some red envelopes with new dollar bills from the bank.

7. Pay respect to the elderly family members, so go visit granny (or give her a call).

8. Invite a lion dance troupe to your place to evict bad spirits from the premises.

9. Open every door and window in your home at midnight to let go of the old year.

10. Hold a reunion dinner on New Year's Eve. Gather family members, near and far away, and get together to celebrate!

And remember - everything about New Year's Day should represent good fortune. For some, good fortune may mean love and romance. To others it may mean a new job, a pay rise, or a baby. So make sure you increase your luck this CNY. Gong Xi Fa Cai!
