If you are looking for a great Aussie beach holiday, you need a week (or two) in Byron Bay. Here’s the insiders guide…
Swim & Surf
Famous for its beaches, you can try a different break everyday. Start with Main Beach, just at the end of the Main Street, then head east to the north-facing Clarkes Beach and The Pass which is a popular surfing spot. Belongil is dog friendly and Wategos is popular with the rich and famous. If the winds are up, head to Cosy Corner, tucked under the south side of Cape Byron. Tallows and Broken Head are beautifully deserted surf spots if you want to explore further.
Shop & Shop
The Aussie designer brands have arrived in town! Head to Hunter (cnr Fletcher and Lawson St) for Bracewell, Seduce and Wrangler. In Jonson St visit Shubar for your Sambag and Alex & Alex fix, and Nami for the latest summer dresses. For great homewares, head to Byron Bay Green House in Fletcher St, and Private Life in Lawson St. If you have kids, don’t miss Tiny People at 15 Fletcher St (and if you don’t have kids you’ll want them after a visit to this store!)
The markets are also a must… Byron is on first Sunday and Bangalow the fourth Sunday of the month.
Wine & Dine
For brekky, we love Byron Beach Café, a classic 1950s themed surf club experience p.612 6685 8400. Good for a shopping break is The Olive Leaf, with its chilled out vibe (cnr Jonson St and Marvell St). The Balcony is the restaurant on the balcony at the round about. Dish is finer dining, whilst Fish Heads with their outdoor beachfront deck on Main Beach is the place to go for your Aussie seafood fix p.612 6680 7632.
Slow Down
For a slower, smaller and simpler experience head to Brunswick Heads, where Conti serves great coffee, or hit the pub for a relaxed lunch. Head for the hills and take a stroll in the quaint village of Bangalow, where there’s plenty of shops to browse, such as Echidna Place, Charlotte’s Web, Lazybones, and Wax Jambu. Take a break at Ate or Utopia Cafe in the main street and watch the world go by.
