Mineral makeup
What’s all the fuss about?
24 July 2009
So what's all the hype about mineral makeup? What's with the iron oxide and titanium dioxide? It's worth a brief trip back to chemistry class to get your head around this fab new makeup trend.
Made with pure, crushed minerals from the earth, mineral makeup is 100% natural, so it's actually good for your skin. It's 100% chemical free, long lasting, water and sweat resistant and hypoallergenic, perfect for our steamy climate.
Mineral makeup is great for damaged, sensitive skin and for those that have cosmetic surgery, chemical peels and laser resurfacing. In fact, as most mineral makeups contain zinc, the foundation helps to calm and sooth the skin and act as an anti-inflammatory. It also has a natural 15+ UVA & UVB sun protection or higher. And because it contains no preservatives it has an excellent shelf life, great for the budget conscious.
So what's the catch?
We have tried a number of brands, including Pure Finish Mineral Powder Foundation by Elizabeth Arden (SPF20, $56), the Australian brand Wild Nature (SPF15, $60) and bareMinerals by Sephora (SPF15, $13-120). They are all light and creamy to wear and provide good coverage... However, mineral makeup can be a little more difficult to apply evenly. But for clear healthy skin, it's definitely worth it.
