Bang on Bangkok

16 September 2009

Bangkok has so much to offer, from shopping, bars, art to cooking, here are our favourites...

Design Time
The US and European catwalks have demonstrated the new talents from Bangkok since the 90's. Head to Gaysorn Plaza for local talent like Sretsis ('sisters' spelt backwards) who have lovely feminine flocks and Chanel-inspired jackets, Myth a great multi-brand shop that sells some of the funkiest designs from local designers and Ggub for wall illustrations and cuff bracelets.

Riding Along on My Push Bike Honey
Dawdle past magnificent views, meander through pastoral back roads or tackle a trail from backstreets to canal paths. Take a bike tour through Bangkok to see how local people do their daily shopping. The well informed tour guide leads you safely on chosen paths, points out hidden places of interest. And as Bangkok is completely flat, these guys promise no hills or mountains. Thumbs up to that.

Go Go Gallery
There's loads of fab galleries in Bangkok, so print off a copy of the Bangkok Art Map to create your own tour. You can find large galleries, like 100 Tonson Gallery with multimedia art, to smaller galleries like H Gallery, run by American expat Ernest H Lee in a converted school house.

Schools In
If you have time and you haven't done a cooking school in Thailand this is must. Get inspired by the fabulous Thai cuisine. We like Amita Tahi Cooking Class on the banks of the Yai Canal off the Chao Phraya. Of course, you get to enjoy the fruits of your labour...!

Lazy Lunching
Set in a wooden bungalow, surrounded by gardens and lotus covered pools, Bo Lan is the combined efforts of a Bangkok native, Bo Songvisava and Australian Dylan Jones. Here they create sophisticated dishes that blend east and west like their sour orange mackerel curry. Delicious. Head here on the weekend to enjoy their tapas style menu.

To Market
Of course you are going to squeeze in a visit to Chatuchak to pick up that Siamese fighting fish! Or perhaps head directly to section 26, where you will find the antiques, silver and leather and a café serving Illy coffee. Perfecto. Catch the BTS train out to Mo Chit and a taxi back with all your purchases.

Sky High
Sharing the same altitude as Vertigo at the Banyan Tree, Moon Bar is a heavenly rooftop bar that provides the perfect escape from the Bangkok madness. Been there, done that? Then head to Red Bar at Centara Grand, which lights up Bangkok with its giant illuminated lotus-inspired arch. Afterwards head to Sirocco, a fantastic open air restaurant at the State Tower Building (up from Patpong, Silom). A superb place to go - the best in Bangkok but be warned ... if it rains, the restaurant just closes down...!
