Creative Tigers, Hidden Talents
Tap into those creative juices
26 April 2010
You have always fancied yourself as a creative type.
You wear red & pink.
You are constantly changing your hair style and you love your rainbow eye shadow palette and know how to use it.
But now you want to become a real artisan. You have the time, you have the interest, and you have a number of digits that are just calling out for some jewel-encrusted attention.
The jewellery design process is fascinating. It is much more than just coming up with a pretty picture to show to a client or hand to a jeweller to make. Every design that is created should be beautiful (of course!), but also durable and comfortable. This seems pretty obvious, but some of these basic rules are often overlooked by the inexperienced designer, leading to fragile jewellery or jewellery that looks great but does not sit comfortably, or worse, is too heavy for the wearer. (We don't want grazed knuckles now, do we?)
Beyond beauty, durability and wearability is budget - designing a fabulous piece but miscalculating the sizes of the diamonds or the weight of the gold can lead to expensive mistakes! Good designers take all of these things into consideration before showing a concept to a customer or starting work on their masterpieces...
Students from around the world enrol in The Jewellery Design and Management International School which has professional courses in the fundamentals of Jewellery Design, History of Jewellery and even Computer Aided Jewellery Design. The school has recently expanded into new premises at Shaw Towers where you will find all the facilities for jewellery training, as well as a soon-to-be-opened retail space where the school's budding designers can share and sell their creative expressions.
Delve into the fascinating world of jewellery, check out the JDMIS Website (where Honeycombers members stand to win a jewellery certification!) or visit JDMIS at their Open House on Sunday May 16th from 3pm-5:30pm. RSVP by phone or SMS to the school on 9125 4107 to reserve a seat.
