Like a Rhinestone Cowboy
Planning a big jewellery buy?
06 April 2010
So you have precious stones, gem stones, semi-precious stones, crystalline rock, polished stones, cut stones, organic rocks, peals, opals, rubies, sapphires, rare stones, jadeite, nephrite, diamonds and pink diamonds - are you a Rhinestone Cowboy when it comes to your gems?
[Looks of confusion]
We all love our gemstones, but how much do we really know about the precious minerals and organic gems we wear? Do you use the 'tooth test' when buying pearls? If you lightly rub your front teeth over the surface of natural or cultured pearls, you will feel a gritty sensation; do this on any imitation pearls and they will feel completely smooth... don't tell me you didn't know that little pearl of wisdom?
[Audible *sigh*]
Have you ever used the 'huff test' when buying diamonds: breathing on your diamonds to see if they steam up quickly; diamonds conduct heat so quickly that the condensation disappears almost immediately... But beware - synthetic moissanite is commonly used as a high-quality diamond imitation and has a similarly high thermal conductivity so it passes this quick test...
[Audible gasps]
If you are passionate about your jewellery, or want to explore the world of gems from mines to markets, The Jewellery Design and Management International School has professional courses in the fundamentals of Gemmology. Ideal for those planning a big jewellery buy, interested in their precious possessions or fascinated by the jewellery industry. Moreover this certification course is modular, meaning you can focus in on just the topics you are most interested in, like the differences between Jadeite and Nephrite, and what sellers really mean when they try to sell you 'Taiwan Jade' 'Australian Jade' or 'Korean Jade'!
Delve into the fascinating world of gemstones, check out the JDMIS Website (where honeycombers members stand to win a jewellery certification!) or visit JDMIS at their Open House this April 23rd from 3-5:30pm or 7pm-9:30pm where you can learn more about the industry and the captivating arts and sciences related to jewellery. RSVP by phone or SMS to the school on 9125 4107 to reserve a seat.
