Park It!
Kids Parks and Playgrounds in Singapore
19 May 2010
Your friends Green Grass, Fresh Air, and Room-to-Move are calling out to you. But alas, your troops are tired of Jacob Ballas Gardens and the East Coast Park. Time to get out and explore!
Suburban parks with playgrounds
These are fantastic for a stroll and a run-a-around if you live in the local area. All have a basic playground, and some even have shade! If you live Sixth Ave way, cruise over to Namly Park or Toh Yi Drive. If you live closer to town try Goldhill Drive which has a toy-car perfect for little boys or Watten Estate Park which is also a hit, as it has shade and is closely located to Hillcrest shops, perfect for that post-park gelati. If you are near River Valley go wild at the fun Tiong Bahru Park which has sand, a merry-go-round and a crazy tilted train.
Parks with punch
If your little mite is looking for some serious park entertainment, hike up to Pasir Ris Park. Here you will find slides, swings, bouncing bridges, giant space-nets, cableways, pretend buses and merry-go-rounds. Visit Monday-Thursday to beat the crowds.
Done that? West Coast Park is calling. Head to Area 3 where you will find the Adventure Play Area, packed with flying foxes, a pirate ship playground and a giant pyramid. Need more? Pack your kite and join the kite flyers at the nearby playing field. When you're done head over to Area 2 where you will find the go-carting, bicycle obstacle course and BBQ pits.
Outdoor classrooms
If play time is over, and you want Mister or Missy to develop a green thumb hot foot it to Hort Park. Here you will find a playground, large green lawns, fun interactive 'garden rooms' and a Butterfly Garden, with free tours on the last Saturday of every month (9am & 11am). The school holiday program here caters from K1 up, is also worth taking a geeze. We like the upcoming Kids Workshop on Vegetables and Fruits (20 June, ages 5-12).
If you have a history buff in the house, enjoy the sunshine and sea breeze at Labrador Park and while you are there check out the Labrador Secret Tunnels. These wartime tunnels used by the British Army during the World War II were not discovered till 2001. Perfect for your little Napoleon.
Wide open spaces
Feel the need to look far into the horizon? Head to the large and leafy Bishan Park. Whilst the playground needs a paint job, the bonus here is Aramsa Spa is located in the park - perfect for a cheeky massage while the family takes in the fresh air and that fresh-cut grass smell. Ahhh the serenity!
