Singapore National Day and things to do with the kids in August

Where to watch the fireworks?
Be part of the action and hustle with the crowd for front row standing room at Marina Bay Sands Waterfront Boardwalk, or the Esplanade Waterfront Promenade. Merlion Park and the Esplanade Bridge will also be crowded, so try the newly opened Helix Bridge instead. Or you could pull out the family picnic rug at the Marina Boulevard Open Field and sit back and enjoy the show.

If you're looking to enjoy a celebratory glass of bubbly with your firecrackers, book a table at one of our top bars to view the fireworks.

Support Singaporean talent
Pack up the kids, dog, picnic rug and some Sunday night supper (and a bottle of wine for you) and enjoy the sounds of a free concert in the Botanic Gardens. There's a Chopin recital this Sunday, and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra next Sunday. The kids can run around while you can sit back and enjoy the serenity.

What could be more inspirational than watching the stars of the future (and now!). The Youth Olympic Games will dazzle you and inspire your kids. Our picks are table tennis, gymnastics and diving.

Old-school kampung culture
Re-live the days before computers and play the traditional games of kampung childhoods past. Teach your little ones the simple, self-made yet ingenious games that were played in old Singapore.

X marks the spot
Discover a new corner of Singapore, one treasure hunt at a time. Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game to be played by the internet savvy adventure seekers in your family. All you need is a GPS device to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, and then share your experiences online. Warning: this could become a family addiction.

Sweet sales
It wouldn't be a Singapore celebration without a sale or three! For the bookworms in your family, Borders are having a book sale (until 9 August) at the Singapore Expo Hall. The Body Shop will have you looking gorgeous (65% off selected products until August 13) and Fox will have your family stepping out in style (with 45% off any second item purchased, and $45 membership - UP =$150, until 9 August).
