Oktoberfest celebrates its 200th anniversary this year. And in honour of the world-famous German festival of all-out beer-imbibing which began in 1810 in Bavaria, in commemoration of Crown Prince Ludwig's wedding, we've pub-crawled our way through the best spots in Singapore to raise your stein. As if we needed another excuse to drink more beer...
Authentically German
What better way to kick off the festival than to enjoy some authentic Weissbier and feast on hearty German fare? Check out the special Oktoberfest brew at Brotzeit, and chase it with plenty of pork knuckle, brezn (pretzels) and wiener schnitzel (breaded veal). There'll also be a double celebration going on at Paulaner Brauhaus, because come September 24 to 26, Paulaner will be bringing out the big screens for "live" screening of the F1 race.
Local brews
Once you've seen the Monster Green Lager at Red Dot Microbrewery, you'll never forget it. A shimmering shade of bright emerald, it is purportedly good for you too, having gotten its distinctive hue from European-manufactured spirulina. For those with an even more adventurous palate, the Traveller's Wheat brew over at Archipelago Brewing, with its dashes of tamarind, ginger and lemongrass, is equally unforgettable.
Cosy joints
Prefer to celebrate away from the hordes in town? Head down to Bar Bar Black Sheep at their new outlet at Robertson Quay; where their yummy Thai-Western chow will go down a treat with your choice of premium draft beer, as will their no-service-charge-or-GST policy. Or pop over to the cosy Alchemy Bistro at Central Mall, and take your time to get to know more than 20 craft beers, ales and ciders.
