Learning Baby Signs

The tantrums, the tears, the frustration and the fears of those 'terrible twos' are approaching, or maybe they are already here, and there is nothing much you can do, you suspect, but brace yourself.

If only your baby could tell you what's wrong, or what they want... but maybe they can...

There has been a new trend to teach babies sign language before they can talk, so they can tell you what is going on without the tearful performance. Baby Signs is an international program that is taught here in Singapore by expat mother of 3, Tania Leger.

Tania runs an excellent 6 class course in which she teaches you and your baby (aged 4 months - 24 months) how to sign simple every day needs and wants like 'water' 'milk' 'more', 'finished' and even 'I love you!'. You will learn how to sign 6-7 new words each class around a theme, like feeding and sleep, through song and play. You also receive books, a reference guide, a CD, a DVD, and a weekly handout with baby sign diagrams and educational topics - to help with your signing at home throughout the week. Classes can be held in your own home (you just need a group of 4 like-minded mums & bubs), at the ParentLink facility on McNair Road or at a condo in Bukit Timah.

Research shows that babies who learn to sign talk sooner, have fewer tantrums, get a jump start on their intellectual development, express emotions more easily and develop stronger bonds with their parents. Sounds like a list of pretty impressive reasons to give it a go.

If you think about it, kids learn some signs very naturally, like waving 'bye bye' and shaking their head for 'no', so this is just building on a natural skill and focusing their development on communication - which then accelerates their learning about the world around them.

So rather than eagerly awaiting for that day your baby can ask politely for the water (yes we all dream of that day) maybe this is another option that is worthy of consideration.

For more information see the Baby Signs website or contact Tania on babysignswithtania@yahoo.com or take a look at the Singapore Baby Signs Meetup group to check the class schedules.
