17 May 2011
Competition is fierce. Nitro frozen chocolate meringues and all.
It's the midpoint of Diageo Reserve World Class 2011 season, the annual luxury bartending competition that involves 10,000 bartenders from 39 markets.
And what do we have to show for it?
The most impressive cocktails entered for the challenges.
Five signature serves, the best from the first two challenges, are ready for tasting. From truffle infused rum to Burmese honey and curry leaves - these clever and creative drinks are calling for your tasting. Set yourself the weekend challenge of tasting all 5 of these winning concoctions!
1. 'Patrick's Signature Ron Zacapa', Tippling Club, $26++, Myat Zaw Win a.k.a. Patrick
Juxtaposing hot and cold, with warmed Ron Zacapa rum served neat alongside a nitro frozen chocolate meringue on a bed of white chocolate rocks and orange jelly with edible skin. This is the first place winner of Rum + service ritual challenge.
2. 'Distinto-Diferente', TAB, $26++, Zach Elias
Paying tribute to the Guatemalan origins of Ron Zacapa rum and a well-loved local dessert, this serve is a pyramid of kueh lopis topped off with a luxurious Ron Zacapa and gula melaka based sauce, with Ron Zacapa spiked chocolates on the side.
3. 'Indulgence in the Clouds', Orgo, $28++, Akihiro Eguchi
A dreamy combination of truffle infused Ron Zacapa rum, homemade chocolate cream and virgin sugarcane honey.
4. 'Ketel Kurrie', Nektar, $30++, Raveen Misra
Although the curry leaf is often associated with Indian cuisine, it is in fact very much a main ingredient in most Southeast Asian cuisines. Playing on the herb's versatility and creating a cocktail that on its own encompasses the piquant, earthy notes that embodies this cuisine, Ketel Kurrie is surprising and well-balanced drink with Ketel One vodka, air dried curry leaves, pink grapefruit juice, Tahitian lime juice, Benedictine D.O.M, topped off with Balinese saffron.
5. 'Hello Mother', Tippling Club, $18++, Myat Zaw Win a.k.a. Patrick
Paying tribute to his mother and home country, this simple but memorable serve combines Ketel One vodka, Burmese citrus, homemade bitters and honey water made from an uncommon Burmese honey specially sourced and imported for this drink. Drip bottles containing the main ingredients are provided for guests to add to taste.
These drinks are available for the month of May only - so this is your chance to be the judge!
