Support The Green Corridor

Every now and then you have the opportunity to have a say with just a click of the button, and make a wee difference.

Here is one of those opportunities.

The Nature Society has submitted a proposal to the government called The Green Corridor: A Proposal to Keep the Railway Lands as a Continuous Green Corridor. The current KTM Railway Land will become Singapore's after train operations cease on 1 Jul 2011.

This is a once-in-a-nation's-history opportunity for us to retain and create something completely unique which no other country can replicate - a green spine running through the centre of the country.

This Green Corridor could become Singapore's Central Park or Hyde Park.

There are so many reasons to keep this beautiful piece of land (in case you need any convincing to act):

1. The Green Corridor connects many of our parks and is already like a nature park. It'll also connect many people together with 1.2 million people living along the entire corridor.

2. This will be one the largest contiguous public spaces in the world. In our urban planning (and please don't blame it on the weather), we have a depressing dearth of public spaces.

3. It will be a clean and green transport route. Whether via a cycling path or an electric tram, this would be a wonderful new way for people in Singapore to travel in the future. Again, this is something unique and sustainable.

4. Preserving history. Apart from being a physical record of our links to Malaysia, there are many points of historical interest along the corridor which relate to life in the 50s, 60s and 70s. The Green Corridor has the potential to be an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wouldn't that be something!

5. At this stage of development of our country and us as individuals, we've moved well beyond seeking satisfaction of basic and economic needs. The Green Corridor cannot be just about dollars and cents, cost-benefit, or KPIs. It physically personifies the heartware we need for our future.

What you can do... Sign the pledge and like The Green Corridor facebook page and if you are a tweet-er, just give it a little mention #thegreencorridor and spread the word!
