Yes the chi-chi hotels are nice, but when you are staying for a week or travelling with tots in tow, there is only one way to go - with room to move.

Shopping at the local markets, hanging out in a living room as opposed to a hotel lobby and staying in a real neighbourhood are all major draw cards to apartment rentals. Oh, and you might even be able to cook in the kitchen too!

That's why we love the new Roomorama service. Better than a house-swap, this online marketplace of private apartments and homes provide significant savings, plus the opportunity to live local.

Attracting a cult following among the yuppies and professionals Roomorama provides city accommodation at a steal and an authentic city experience. From NYC, Paris, Sydney to Marrakesh, Roomorama has a super efficient market place where you can see host's properties and list your own.

More in tune than Bananarama, Roomorama takes away all the risk of renting privately, as your money is safe until you are satisfied to hand over your unique payment code. You can pay via credit cards (phew!) the site takes automated bookings and makes the whole process easy-peasy.

Putting up your own pad is really simple too, and there is no fee for listing - only when someone books your place does Roomorama take a fee (8-12% on top, depending on the length of the stay, borne by the guest). After you have confirmed a booking, you can rest easy knowing that your guest has paid in advance.

Always wanted to go for that two-month yoga retreat in India? Leave your place in good hands, and your guest may even take care of your pooch. Sweet.

This is the perfect excuse for that trip to Paris, Bon Voyage!

This sounds really cool! Now I know how I can make some extra cash when I am away on my month-long vacations. I always find it difficult to find pet-friendly rentals and often have to leave my dog with my neighbour. But after checking out Roomorama, I even found some pet-friendly rental spaces, which is absolutely perfect! Now my dog can come on our trips too. Really excited about this, can't wait to travel again this year end!

This is really cool, did any of you read about Roomorama in Life! Straits Times on Tuesday? I think they had a 2 or 3 page write up, along with other similar sites with short term rentals. I really like the idea, although whenever I travel with my parents, they're not really open to this idea. I just came back from Montreal and stayed at a Roomorama apartment and my parents (I could tell) were jealous at the price I paid and the place I got. It's really cool and much cheaper than a hotel. Now I need to deliberately leave the papers in my parents' room so that they'll read the article and be convinced.....and I can have another holiday while living like a local!
