The 10 best international TV shows for harvesting the perfect vegetative state...

Breaking Bad
If you've missed this oddball, catch up before the final season. Unpredictable plots, tight directing and a clever casting make this show about a chemistry-teacher-turned-drug-lord ground-breaking, riveting stuff. Download it from iTunes.

Boardwalk Empire
Happily Steve Buscemi is now recognisable for more than just his peculiar looks. This mobster tale of Atlantic City in the Prohibition era is a compelling political and historical drama. Series One is currently screening on Starhub.

Game of Thrones
This unlikely spectacle of a fantasy historical world features tyrant kings and corrupt incestuous queens. Think Lord of the Rings meets The Tudors, with enough cleavage to keep everyone entertained. Series One is currently screening on Starhub.

Downton Abbey
British period costume dramas don't typically appeal to the masses, but this upstairs/downstairs tale contains as much political intrigue as a Singaporean election. With the added bonus of Maggie Smith, of course. Series One is currently screening on Starhub.

An Idiot Abroad
Karl Pilkington, Ricky Gervais' punching bag muse, tours the world passing hilariously ridiculous comment. Because he hates new experiences, his musings about the pointlessness of wonders like the Great Wall of China are extremely comical. Currently screening on Starhub.

The Big C
A quirky black comedy about a woman diagnosed with terminal cancer. Sounds sad, but Laura Linney and cast use dry humour to make it bittersweet. At half an hour, the episodes are not mentally taxing. Series One has screened on Starhub or download it on iTunes.

Sons of Anarchy
Just watching the likes of Katey Sagal, Ron Perlman and the gorgeous Charlie Hunnam clad in leather is enough to make you feel cool. But the lives of biker gangs are complicated, so start from series 1 before catching up on Starhub. Series One is currently screening on Starhub.

Modern Family
It swept this year's Emmys with good reason - laugh-out-loud absurdity, outrageous situations and clever scripting. Plus Sofia Vergara's body on its own is good enough reason to tune in. Past series have been on Starhub or download it from iTunes.

Sister Wives
This voyeuristic reality series follows Mormon Kody Brown and his three wives and 13 children (plus he's courting a fourth). Slightly shameful, but totally addictive, you can get your fix as it premieres on Starhub this week or grab the DVD online.

Come Fly With Me
This mockumentary spoof by the Little Britain team was the most watched comedy in Britain last year. Set in an airport following three fictional airlines, it is full of politically incorrect humour to make you cringe and laugh at the same time. Download it from iTunes.
