Top Ten Visitor Guide
The Singapore Hit List for Visitors
19 September 2011
Our favourite ways to entertain (and distract) those out-of-towners ...
1. Nothing impresses visitors like an intimate brekkie with endangered primates at the Singapore Zoo. Nope not the busloads of tourists, it's the orang utans you get up close with at the Jungle Breakfast (9-10.30am).
2. Visitors might want go to Marina Bay Sands for the obligatory over-priced cocktail, but given the casino, sorry, entertainment precinct is an essential part of our skyline, we think somewhere like LeVeL33 or Lantern Bar that overlooks the casino, sorry, entertainment precinct is more impressive.
3. Show your guests the real Singapore by eating chilli crab (groan, not again!)... but in the HDB heartlands. Book ahead as Mellben Seafood (#01-11 Block 211, Lorong 8, Toa Payoh, 6353 3120) is very authentic which means plastic chairs and long queues.
4. Tire out over-enthusiastic guests by sending them out on the 9-kilometre Southern Ridges Walk. They'll appreciate the unique exposure to Singapore's great outdoors and you'll appreciate the peace and quiet.
5. Orchard Road's retail siren call can't be avoided, so plan a trip mid-week around the middle of the day when the stores are less crowded. Starting towards 313@Somerset is good so you can decamp at Oriole mid-way.
6. Show what multiculturalism on steroids looks like by visiting Little India on a Sunday afternoon. It's a fascinating (and sometimes rude) awakening to how another part of the Singaporean population lives.
7. Try chicken rice and all hawker things nice at Singapore Food Trail, the charming vintage-inspired centre. Or opt for the air-conditioned luxury (and expense) of a Singapore free-flow brunch, we are loving The Hangover Brunch for $88++ at the chic brasserie Clifford at The Fullerton Bay Hotel.
8. A quick and easy way to impress visitors is to take a drive over the Benjamin Sheares Bridge along the ECP. Head towards the airport over the bridge, get to Fort Road, then do a U-turn to come back into the city. The views of Marina Bay are pretty spectacular.
9. Learn about our history with a fascinating Heritage Walking Tour. Most tours are only 90 minutes but they're a cheap and cheerful way to learn something about our past that's more fun than you'd expect.
10. Finish off with a relaxing massage. We love My Foot Reflexology at Great World City where a majority of the therapists are blind or handicapped. And as for spas, we have high end lavish pampering, to cheap and cheerful spas - see You Kneaded Me for our favourites across the board.
