Stylish South Africa
The Definitive South Africa Itinerary
28 November 2011
Big-cat spotting on exclusive safari reserves? Rare South African sirloin at Cape Town's Nobu? Organic Shiraz in the Winelands? An 11 hour flight from Singapore is all that stands between you and one of the greatest tourist destinations on earth. In a nation brimming with incredibly luxurious boutique hotels and once in a lifetime experiences, the biggest problem with South Africa is knowing where to start. Helpfully, we've designed what we think is the definitive SA itinerary.
Safari splendour
Start with a rip-rollicking safari adventure in the most game heavy reserve in Africa, Kruger National Park. Singita Lebombo is our favourite luxury lodge here, set deep within a 15,000-hectare private concession and secluded on a clifftop overlooking the stunning N'wanetsi River. Its 15 rooms are perfect for drinking in the views, clad in steel and timber with enormous game-gazing decks, outdoor lounge beds and bathtubs. Despite the wild location, modern luxuries have not been scrimped: rooms have iPod docking stations, air con and WiFi so you can upload your pics of the Big Five (lions, leopards, elephants, Cape buffalo and black rhino) straight onto Facebook!
Cape Town cool
Next, it's time to experience one of the most picturesque cities in the world. Cape Town positively hums with cool factor thanks to the rise of cutting-edge galleries, hip night spots, sexy beaches and mouthwatering eateries. For a downtown city vibe, you can't beat Kensington Place for its knockout views of Table Mountain from the breakfast terrace. For couples wanting the services of a hotel but the independence to self-cater should they wish, More Quarters is a gorgeous option, situated strolling distance from some top restaurants and sidewalk cafes. It has a pool and 14 one-bedroom apartments and 2 two-bedroom apartments (perfect for families and groups of friends).
Winelands wind down
Finally, the idyllic Winelands beckons, a scenic hour's drive away. Swathed in rugged mountains and laced with vineyards, this region is pure foodie heaven with hundreds of fine restaurants and a smashing selection of luxury hotels. Two new openings have caused us extreme excitement: for serious "wow" factor, Delaire Graff Lodge is in a league of it's own for service, spa pampering and gobsmacking views. Owned by Laurence Graff (of Graff Diamonds fame), each suite contains art from his personal collection and the food and wine-tasting lounge are equally splendid. For a more organic, family-friendly alternative, Babylonstoren is set on a working farm and vineyard, anchored by a Cape Dutch 1777 manor house. Sleep in 5-star farm style accommodation and indulge at their restaurant, Babel, which is a celebration of their fresh farm produce and an awesome new addition to the foodie scene.
