FORBIDDEN CITY GIVEAWAY
Win 2 Night Stay at The Peninsula Beijing
Monday, 26 Mar 2012
We love travelling, but there are some things we can’t stand: harried itineraries, non-stop jetting, dubious tour guides… Sometimes it feels like we need another vacay to recover from our travel fatigue. So when we started planning a trip to Beijing, we were thrilled to find Eastern Journeys (run by know-it-all-but-in-a-good-way David Allardice). We hounded this Chinese travel guru for the scoop on the grand Beijing:
1. Ok, we’ll be straight. Why visit Beijing anyway?
Because it’s fascinating! It’s part old China and part techy advanced city. Throw in a lone morning at the Forbidden City, some bargaining at the eclectic Weekend Market and some strange (but very good) food, and you’ll see why it’s irresistible.
2. So… What’s Beijing’s best-kept secret?
Its beauty really shines in the dead of winter: the skies are blue and the city tourist-less.
3. We’re huge foodies. Do you have any favourite restaurants or favorite specialties in the city?
I definitely can’t get enough of Peking Duck. Doesn’t sit well on the hips but who cares about calories when it tastes this good! Zesty plum sauce, spring onions, perfect crackly skin… Yum. You have to try Da Dong and Duck de Chine.
4. Sounds so good. How about the Chinese delicacies, or are you just an adventurous eater?
Well I’ve travelled to really remote places over the last 25 years and I’ve always thought I was an adventurous eater, but I have never ever dared to try the strange insects at the night food market off of Wangfujing. And those strange animals parts too… I never even knew they had parts like that!
5. Well Beijing sure is intriguing… but what about the rest of China?
Oh Beijing’s just the tip of the iceberg! There are also the Terracotta Warriors in Xian, the Pandas in Chengdu, Yunnan’s stunning countryside, and atmospheric Tibet.
Our friends at Lightfoot Travel organize fully customizable trips to Beijing with Eastern Journeys. Get set to create your own adventure! Cook with local housewives in the morning, learn to make your own kite in the afternoon (then fly it on the Great Wall the next day), and master some Kung Fu moves in the evening.
