Fact: Every child has different cognitive abilities – they learn things differently and at various paces.
Fact: Of the four skills of literacy, reading is the most difficult to acquire.
Fact: LEAP SchoolHouse‘s three-step Reading Programme for 3-6 year olds makes reading fun, engaging, and participative by using different tools to help each child learn.
The comprehensive programme is divided into three stages – Ants on the Apple and Literacy through Stories (levels 1 and 2), and held once a week on weekends.
If you’re looking to give your kids a headstart on the magical world of reading and writing, the programme is definitely one to try. We love the dynamic structure and multi-disciplinary curriculum!
Ants on the Apple is a phonics programme that targets 3-4 year-olds. It employs words, rhymes, and songs to make learning letter to sound recognition more meaningful. For every letter they’re introduced, kids are immersed in a list of words that begin with the letter of the week as well as pre-writing skills. Clever cookies!
At level 1 of Literacy Through Stories, 4-6 year-olds build their vocabulary by picking up high frequency words through narrative stories and communicative and simple writing exercises. LEAP aims to translate children’s oracy skills to print concepts by teaching children the importance of “reading to learn” as opposed to “learning to read”.
At level 2, LEAP begins to nurture little storytellers, poets, and writers by teaching children how to express, advocate, and talk about their ideas and emotive moments. They are also introduced to quality children’s literature and taught how to relate reading to meaning by using writing as a form of response.
