Fun Fitness Classes to Try

Wednesday, 25 Jul 2012

We admit: we don’t have the greatest discipline when it comes to exercise and our attention span isn’t too great (hey, it comes with working on the Internet!).

So we’re always looking for new ways to get moving and keep motivated, even if it means being suspended from the ceiling and holding yoga poses in the air!

We’ve sourced some crazy classes to try out – they’re 100% not boring and will get you one step closer to feeling gym-bunny fit!

Biker Chick

Are you a spin addict? These spin classes are tougher than traditional indoor cycling ones. Unlike stationary bikes, the RealRyder bikes at Urban Fitness Lab tilt and lean, so they really get those abs and obliques burning. Or get a total body workout with Krank classes at Physique 360. These demanding sessions work your upper body as hard as your lower body, which means a guaranteed aching (in a good way) body the next day.

Power Up

You don’t have to run miles to lose inches. At Alphafit, you’ll learn to swing kettlebells, and trust us on this – you’ll be leaner, fitter, and a whole lot stronger if you stick with it. And let us quell those fears right here: no, you will not gain bulgy muscles. But you will get those arms looking mighty fine.

Scale New Heights

YogaFly at Upside Motion is bound to challenge any yoga junkie. Imagine stretching, toning, and strengthening your body while suspended in the air by a seven-yard long fabric swing. Sounds crazy, but totally fun!

The Great Outdoors

If you’re gym-phobic, take inspiration from the great outdoors and train with Lisa Clayton, founder of OzFit. From low-impact, women-only classes, to interval training with the boys, you’ll be huffing your way to that toned bod in no time.

Or if you like things slower (though no less challenging), try some yoga in the park with Sabina Fernandez. Classes are held at the Botanic Gardens (Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden entrance).

Like the idea of doing yoga outdoors but want more flexibility? Rebecca Jade of yogalove offers Vinyasa Flow, Iyengar, Yin Yoga, Pre-natal, Post-natal, and even children’s yoga (coming soon) classes at Botanic Gardens, Fort Canning, and Robertson Quay.

Shake It

Exercise is tough enough as it is, so if we can burn 6 times the calories in an ordinary workout, you bet we’ll jump on it. Croyez has upped the Power Plate ante by offering challenging, kick-ass classes, and the best part is a 25 minute class works you as hard as a 2.5 hour workout at any other gym!

Runner’s High

We get it – sometimes nothing feels as good as a run. But to avoid the 101 injuries runners often sustain, pop by The Runner’s Gait to get the right shoes. Their uber cool Gait Lab uses video analysis to help you breakdown your running style, identify biomechanical issues, and yes, pick shoes to improve your performance.
