Going for Gold
Best Sports Bars to Watch the Olympics
Wednesday, 25 Jul 2012
In the great SingTel mio versus Starhub TV battle, Starhub subscribers have unfortunately lost out on round-the-clock Olympic screenings this time.
Channel 5 will be airing up to 21 hours of coverage a day, but if you’re hankering for something with a little more gusto (hey, who doesn’t want to cheer on their home country?), here are 7 bars to get your game on!
GOLD
US Pride takes centrestage at the American Club, where Union Bar will be partying from 2am-6am and screening the Opening Ceremony. Guys, c’mon. A bar open till 6am? Now that might require some major athleticism in the beer department.
For the rest of the season, head to Peppermint Park Sports Bar at St. James Power Station. Not only do they have a later closing time (3am on Sun-Thu, 4am on Fri-Sat), they personally told us they’ll be flexible with the closing hours, which means you won’t be booted out with the last 15 minutes in a game to go.
SILVER
Aussie fans know where it’s at. Cheer on the home team at Boomarang with familiar faces, ace service, and as always, great food. They open till 3am so you won’t just be watching repeat telecasts – hurrah to that!
Beer Market won’t be extending their operating hours, but with a fun system of buying beer – prices change according to the demand in the bar, late enough hours (till 2am on Sun-Thu and 3am on Fri-Sat), an energetic crowd, and a central location, this is one bar to visit.
Or head down to Bungy Bar, an iconic local sports bar at Clarke Quay, and get up to no good riling up the diverse crowd of sports fans. Note that they close early at 1am on Sun-Thu, but go till 3am on Fri-Sat.
BRONZE
Is anyone louder than an enthused Irish sports fan? For guaranteed great atmosphere, there’s no better place to be than at Muddy Murphy’s. Closing hours are slightly earlier than our gold and silver picks, but you’ll be working some serious lung power while you’re there.
Serious beer lovers will overlook Brewerkz‘s early closing hours. And since they’re in Clarke Quay, just hop on over to the other central bars to continue the fight!
