Free Places to Watch those Fireworks
Missed out on those table reservations with an unobstructed view of the National Day fireworks? Hit up the surrounding areas for free places to watch them!
The Esplanade Waterfront Promenade and the Esplanade Bridge are both good bets with surrounding NDP activities on the fringe. For a view that gets you up close to the action, drop by the Helix Bridge or if you fancy a celebration with bubbly and a gourmet picnic (don’t forget the red-and-white picnic mat!), set up shop at the new Gardens By The Bay</a. Photographers will already know this, but if stunning images are what you're after, get to Marina Boulevard Open Field early to claim your prized spot.
Our last tip: the top floors of surrounding car parks make really good vantage points. We’ve heard that Shaw Towers is a great spot to bypass the overzealous picnickers. You’ll be picnicking on solid concrete, but it’s quiet and you get the same great view.
Road Closures
If you’re going in to the city tomorrow, make sure to note that lots of roads have been closed for parade celebrations. Temasek Avenue will be shut down the whole day, while Republic Avenue and Raffles Avenue (between Republic Boulevard and Temasek Ave) will be closed from 9am-1130pm. Other roads include Nicoll Highway (between Raffles Boulevard and Raffles Avenue), Esplanade Drive, and Stamford Rd (between Esplanade Drive and St Andrew’s Road) from 8-1030pm. Head here for the full disclosure.
Celebratory Activities
The Singapore Art Museum will be holding an open house with free entry to all galleries at SAM from 10am tomorrow. A host of other family-friendly activities commences at 11am.
We can always count on Esplanade to celebrate in style. From 8 Aug to 12 August 2012, pop down to join them in a celebration of local dance, music, film, and visual arts. Highlights include face painting, outdoor film screenings and an interactive display of local childhood games.
