Three New Cafes to Unwind At
Tuesday, 11 Sep 2012
Confession: with all the new dining spots popping up around town, we can hardly keep up.
… Just kidding! Got food? We’re there.
Here are three new cafes you need to check out, stat.
Emphasis on stat because we’re guessing these places are gonna get really popular soon.
Café Melba
There are days when we really, really want to be Easties. And a Sunday at Café Melba might make you want to move too – this café exudes that laidback, unperturbed cool that only East-enders seem to possess. Located in the one and only Goodman Arts Centre, Café Melba delivers quality, unpretentious nosh made with the freshest ingredients possible. Come on, these guys even cure their own bacon!
While their food is top-notch, what we really adore is their alfresco dining – the space is so cleverly designed that it manages to be cozy and intimate, yet breezy and private all at once. They also do a mean brunch (almost everyone’s favourite meal), and guess what? Gather those tiny tots cos they dine for free every weekday till the end of October. Melbournians, you don’t want to miss this one.
Café Melba, 90 Goodman Road, Goodman Arts Centre, Singapore 439053, p. 6440 6068, Mon-Fri 10am-10pm, Sat-Sun 8am-10pm
PACT
What happens when one good thing meets another… and another? They join forces to form one massively impressive space. Say hello to PACT, a collaborative effort between multi-label menswear boutique K.I.N, the clever restaurateurs at Kilo, and hair salon PACT + LIM.
So if you’ve already put one and two together, you’ll know that this dynamic space is part eatery, part clothing and lifestyle boutique, and part hair salon. Even if you aren’t intrigued by this multi-tasker’s dream, swing by just to check out this triple threat’s industrial interiors – cool concrete, metal beams, glass – they’re a design junkie’s dream.
PACT, 181 Orchard Road, Orchard Central, #02-16/17/18/19, Singapore 238896, p. 6238 6281 (K.I.N)/ 6884 7560 (Kilo)/ 6884 4143 (PACT +LIM), Tue-Sun 11am-10pm
The Fabulous Baker Boy
First off, we cannot get over that name. Uh-may-zing! Some may recognize Juwanda Hassim from the theatre scene, but if you’re not familiar with the name, you’ll soon be familiar with his tasty cakes. This bakery/café has a daily menu of both sweet and savoury treats, so if you work in the area, we highly recommend this place for a midday snack.
We love that they use dolphin-safe tuna (we’re impressed by the consideration to detail), but we’re really bowled over by the cakes here. Spiced Apple Cake, a seriously rich salted caramel brownie, and red velvet fans – feel free to dig in. Big plus: it’s located at the charming Viridian Art House, which is right opposite Clarke Quay, but a whole lot, how do we say, quieter (read: cultured). And they serve all-day breakfast on Sunday!
The Fabulous Baker Boy, The Foothills, 70 River Valley Road, Singapore 179037, p. 6694 8336, Tue-Sat 1145am-9pm, Sun 10am-5pm
