The Foundation of Goodness
Play Cricket, Support Children in Sri Lanka
Tuesday, 18 Sep 2012
Here’s a name you probably aren’t familiar with: Kushil Gunasekera.
As the founder of Foundation of Goodness, he is assisting 25,000 people from 45 Sri Lankan villages using 30 empowerment sectors.
On Boxing Day 2004, tsunami struck when Kushil was conducting a scholarship program for his children in the grounds of his ancestral villa. Although the destructive waves took the lives of over 30,000 people in Sri Lanka, he managed to save all but one of the 100 children by taking them to the Buddhist temple on higher ground.
Immediately following the tsunami, Kushil turned his ancestral villa (one of the few remaining buildings), into a control center for emergency relief.
Today, this is called the “MCC Centre of Excellence”, where the Foundation empowers many families by providing them with free education, healthcare, and life skills training workshops in IT, sewing and English free of charge.
The Foundation, now wants to do the same thing for the victims of the 29 years-long Sri Lankan civil war by building another village in Northern Sri Lanka, the former epicenter of conflict.
What you can do:
Join The Singapore Cricket Club during its 160 years celebration for a series of events to raise awareness for the Foundation of Goodness.
Sri Lankan cricket legends Muttiah Muralitharan and World No. 1 ranked test batsmen Kumar Sangakarra will be supporting the “Unity Squad” – a young squad made up of the best players from the recent Murali Harmony Cup and representing all the regions of Sri Lanka. They will play against SCC XI in a T20 game on the Padang, commencing at 8:30am on Saturday 13 October 2012.
This will be followed by a children’s coaching clinic on the Padang, hosted by the legends, and a lunchtime reception at the SCC which is open to all. Cricket fans – here’s a great opportunity to rub shoulders with cricket greats!
There will also be an opportunity to enter a competition to bat against Murali on The Padang, and to take home a souvenir video and a signed ball as mementos.
To get involved in any of these events please contact Wendy Foo at the SCC on wendy.foo@scc.org.sg.
