SG International Festival of Arts 2014
Fresh, cutting-edge, and vibrant: the Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA 2014) is back this August for its 37th edition. With the theme ‘Legacy and the Expanded Classic’, festivalgoers can expect to be wowed by 12 visionary works from New York, South Africa, Iran, Japan and Korea.
Explore the struggle for social freedom and identity in the African work – Double Bill: I stand Corrected/Hatched. Grown up fans of Peter Pan will appreciate the surrealist depiction of JM Barrie’s children’s classic staged by the stellar Berliner Ensemble and American music duo CocoRosie.
Inspirational and controversial figures receive a breath of new life in this festival as well. Painter Francisco Goya (Facing Goya), Indian patriot Subhas Chandra Bose (Give Me Your Blood and I Will Give You Freedom), and celebrated dancer Martha Graham (Martha@…The 1963 Interview) live again on the stage of SIFA 2014.
Shakespeare lovers, make sure you catch New York’s The Wooster Group in their radically reworked version of Troilus and Cressida – a Native American tribe fighting against impending doom – Cry, Trojans!
One (free) performance you should check out is Festival Heart: Into The Wild – 36 special-needs individuals from Singapore will realise their dreams of becoming professional artists alongside Swiss company Theatre HORA.
School yourself in all things arty-farty at The O.P.E.N., a pre-SIFA event running from 26 June-12 July that contextualises the festival’s line-up through a series of screenings and talks in a casual, intimate setting.
