What:
Discover a more homely side to the former Soviet republic at Buyan, Singapore's first Russian restaurant now open at Duxton Hill. But don't worry there is a $5 million wine cellar and a private room for 16 guests (with a $20,000 booking fee) if you are out to impress!
Start in the wood-lined bar to sample some of the 50 different types of vodka - including flavours such as chilli and cherry.
Prepare for some ornate gold bling before you head up stairs to the casual dining room. Here you will find a small cosy room to sample some of the unapologetically authentic Russian dishes. Sample Pelmeni ('little ears' of dough filled with three types of meat, as pictured), or Zharenny osyotr (friend sturgeon, a type of white fish found in the Black Sea). Before dining on the Chicken Kiev or the Beefstroganov - two dishes a little more familiar to our palates.
Luckily for inexperienced Russian diners the menus are on ipads, with images and descriptions of each dish - which is not only a nice touch, but very helpful when you are unsure what Golubtsy is...
You can cap the night off with some Cohibas, Partagas or Montecristos or another selection from Buyan's selection of regular, prestige or rare collection of cigars in the bar. This is the kind of place you just never know who you might meet.
Hours: Monday to Saturday. Closed on Sunday.
